Aerie Tee | Madewell Skirt | Rebecca Minkoff Galyn Mules

Last week I did one of those ā€œquestionsā€ boxes regarding things yā€™all wanted to see and a couple people requested fall and winter top suggestions. Living in Texas, I know how to layer. I donā€™t mean layer as in layer to keep warmā€¦I mean layer because it might be 45 degrees when you leave for work, but by the afternoon itā€™s sunny, 75 degrees and humid. (lol) SO heresā€™s my must-haveā€™s for your closet, so you can make the most out of your wardrobe and shop smarter, not more.

-Long Sleeve Tees: I love a good basic and often reach for these when i donā€™t want to think about what to wear. I pair them with jeans, but also with skirts and even nicer pants. They are also great for layering and dressing up with a scarf or statement necklace. Some of my favorite places to shop for these are Aerie, Piko, Nordstrom private label brands (halogen, caslon, etc) and Amazon. Daily Ritual tees are actually my favorite ones, their french terry long sleeve is my #1. So cute, soft and they have a curved hem so you can leave loose, front tuck, or knot. I will say they are pretty much a $20 tee, so I see signs of pilling sooner, but again they are super budget friendly and Iā€™m a firm believer that you get what you pay for. Probably doesnā€™t help that I wear them at least once a week! They are also my favorite tee to wear on an airplane.

-Button Up Shirts. I almost made a separate category for basic button ups and statement ones, buuut the only basic ones I wear are chambray and the occasional white button up. I LOVE a good plaid or gingham button up, as you can wear them alone or layer them really easily. Iā€™m also a big fan of the front tuck or a front knot. Canā€™t go wrong with this! I am waiting for J. Crew Factory to release some more basic yet holiday plaid, because theirā€™s are often my favorite. I will say I actually busted the elbows out of a couple J. Crew factory ones this year, but Iā€™ve had them for 3-4 years, and wear my clothes ā€œhardā€. I also really like Madewellā€™s.

-Sleeveless Turtlenecks: How do yā€™all feel about turtlenecks? They are back ā€œinā€, but Iā€™ve always loved them. I specifically like sleeveless ones, because you can still wear them to work AND they are perfect for layering under a jacketā€¦especially if youā€™re intending to keep said jacket on all day and donā€™t want to sweat like crazy. Breathing room!!

-Basic Sweaters: Life hack? Shop from the mens sweater section!! Thatā€™s where my favorite basic sweaters (think crew neck, v neck, and neutrals) are from! These you can pair alone or layer, which is the goal to shopping smarter and styling more pieces for versatility.

-Statement Sweaters: I like to shop for thicker, statement sweaters for those times itā€™s too cold for layers, but too warm for a jacket. They are also my favorite thing to wear to a party, as I donā€™t really like bringing in my jacket and have these weird thing where I get super warm at get-togethers.

-Moto Jackets: Okay so not an actual ā€œshirtā€, but a MUST!! My favorite is BlankNYC and I wear them all the time. I prefer suede, but smooth leather, faux, and even vegan leather is available these days. They are chic, easy to throw on, and perfect for ANY occasion work or play. I have tons of blog posts on them like: etc. Last year I scored my black one on Black Friday for under $100, but sometimes they go on sale at the Nordstrom Sale ever summer!

-Denim Jackets: Another closet staple. I have blue denim and black denim. To be honest, I probably wear my black denim jacket more, but I love them both! I shop for a less trendy silhouette so I can pretty much wear them forever! I love Leviā€™s, but actually J. Crew Factory has great quality ones too!

-Army Jacket: A trendy piece right now, but olive has always been one of my favorites! I bought lighter weight in this one, because itā€™s a great summer piece, but can also be layered under a coat come winter! Madewell is my favorite for these.

Things to avoid:

Dolman Sleeves: Donā€™t get me wrong, I love a good oversized/dropped sleeve, but they are super annoying when they come to wearing jackets, because they bunch weird. Only wear if you can get away without wearing a jacket. Therefore I probably wouldnā€™t spend money on a dolman sleeve before I bought a basic tee. Just saying!

Off the Shoulder: They even make super cute velvet and more holiday-esque ones, but again really annoying to wear a jacket with them AND itā€™s hard to dance with someone else (ie waltz, 2 step, etc) because either your arms are glued in place or you top/dress keeps riding up. Learned that the hard way last Christmas party season!

Any favorites I forgot?! Any brands that are your go-tos? Iā€™m super into comfy chic these days;)
