Nick and I have been in our apartment for almost 2 years now and we still haven't done much wall decorating. We have a couple paintings that we love, a chalkboard wall, and some shelves, but not much else.  I was racking my brain to figure out something we could put on the walls besides the obvious photos (which I still need to do by the way).

Last fall, I did a cute gallery wall above our bar cart, featuring prints from Minted. I'm not sure why I hadn't thought of it before, but Minted not only does stationary and prints (I did my wedding invitations and save the dates through them), BUT they have fine art. They have actual pieces of art (not just a print)! Anndddd they have a bunch of artists you can scroll through and see their work + pricing to see who can carry out your vision the best.  I stumbled upon Jinhee Park's page and knew she was the perfect person for the job. Something she is known for is doing pet portraits and I'll get into what we wanted and why in a sec, but we wanted a bear portrait and we just knew she could create what we wanted.

I reached out to Jinhee and here we are today! I told her that  I wanted some kind of bear portrait and gave her a couple examples for inspiration. In addition to that, I sent some of her own work that I'd like mine to be similar to. I also mentioned the WHY behind the bear. Nick and I call each other babe and all that, but for the most part, we call each other "bear". Bear, sweet bear, cute bear, etc. You get the idea! We both went to Baylor (didn't meet there though!), so we love bears for that reason. A portrait of a bear just made sense! I think my favorite part of the painting is the yellow/green brush strokes on his face. They totally go with the portrait, yes, BUT they are Baylor colors too. I love how she tied our Alma Mater into the painting.

Overall, Jinhee DELIVERED and then some. I think maybe I'll have to get her to do a portrait of our new puppy, Dino next;) Of course, she is good at animals, but the simplicity and elegance of her work go beyond that! I would highly recommend using her for any commissioned piece. It's so cool to have decorations that were made especially for you and mean so much. Don't get me wrong. There's nothing wrong with prints and stuff like that, but there's just something special about commissioned pieces. They don't go out of style!

For reference, the bear portrait is a 16 x 20. Also, if you want to see how she painted it, she posted this really cool WIP video on her Instagram. View it here.
