Traveling can be fun, but also really exhausting. I'm writing this from my work trip, where I'm currently coming back more exhausted than when I left ;) Oh and waiting on a delayed flight, eating airport food. Our trip to Paso was exactly the opposite. It was rejuvenating and exactly what we needed. You're surrounded by nature, good food and drinks, and no large city. Don't get me wrong. I love Dallas! It's just nice to get away from it all, you know?

Paso Robles is central coast California wine country. I was trying to compare it to Napa and Sonoma, but I really couldn't. If I had to compare, I'd say it's more laid back and more spread out. I guess that's how Sonoma is, but it was just a different feel over all, if that makes sense. From a high level? It was great and I can't wait to go back. I would highly recommend it!  Something that is it's only con (but could also be a pro) is that there's not a direct way there from Dallas. Southwest is apparently going to start offering directs to SLO, but not sure when. If you fly into SLO, it's a 30 minute drive. We flew into LAX, stopped for a night in Santa Barbara, then drove from SB to PR. It was nice because the trip was broken up, but we did feel the full brunt of the almost 4 hour drive from Paso to LA. Either way? It's #worthit.

HERE'S WHAT I'D RECOMMEND FOR PASO ROBLES:

Side note - I typically have a "where to stay" section, but I didn't include that this time, because we stayed on property that is not available to the public. Honestly though, I've had my eye on Hotel Cheval, so I haven't stayed there, but that's where I'd check out if I were you. I think they had me at s'mores cart ;)

WHERE TO WINE: (Side note, I'd make appointments if I were you. Most are going to the appointment only booking strategy.)

  • Epoch Estate Wines (our fave, favorites were Veracity and the zin)

  • Booker (our second fave, favorites were The Ripper and OUBLIΓ‰)

  • Daou Vineyards (third fave, but winner of prettiest view! our favorites were out of budget, but we got some of the rosΓ©!)

  • J Dusi (such a cute little spot and so many instagrammable moments. We bought 2 bottles of "The Don")

  • Herman Story (Honestly I judged this one before we went and was dead wrong. Good wine and a great sense of humor. We bought Nuts and Bolts and the Grenache.)

  • Clos SolΓ¨ne (We didn't get to go here this trip, but it came highly recommended.)

  • Turley (You've probably had their zin.)

  • L'Aventure (Really pretty! Kind of a drive.)

WHERE TO EAT:

  • The Hatch

  • Pony Club Wine Bar (Located at Hotel Cheval)

  • The Range Restaurant (Technically in Santa Margarita)

  • The Grill at Cass House

  • La Cosecha

  • The Restaurant at Justin Vineyards

  • Cello Ristorante

  • Artisan

  • The Apple Farm (Technically in SLO)

WHAT TO DO: other than drink wine ;) )

  • Pismo Beach

  • Hearst Castle

  • Pasolivo Olive Oil Tasting

  • Mission San Miguel

  • Firestone Walker Brewery

  • Point San Luis Lighthouse

  • River Oaks Hot Springs Spa
